What is an Idiom?


       Idioms are words, phrases, or expressions that cannot be taken literally. In other words, when used in everyday language, they have a meaning other than the basic one you would find in the dictionary. Every language has its own idioms. Learning them makes understanding and using a language a lot easier and more fun! 

Examples

 

1. Once in a blue moon
Meaning: Very rarely.
Sentence: I go to bar once in a blue moon.


2. Bring home the bacon

Meaning: to do something successfully, especially to win a game or race; win the race
Sentence: I will bring home the bacon on the swimming competition.



3. Born with golden spoon

Meaning: a child born rich
Sentence: Prince William was born with golden spoon.


4. It's raining cats and dogs
Meaning: raining heavily
Sentence: It's raining cats and dogs today here in the Philippines because of the typhoon.


5. Fair weather friend
Meaning: appearing only during good times
Sentence: Sarah is a fair weather friend, she always leaves me during trouble.


6. Every Jack has his Jill.
Meaning: Every man will eventually find a woman to be his romantic partner.
Sentence: Single man should not worry if he would have a wife someday because every Jack has his Jill.


7. A Piece of Cake
Meaning: A task that can be accomplished very easily.
Sentence: Sarah said that she got a high score in her exam because it's just a piece of cake.


8. Baker's Dozen
Meaning: Thirteen.
Sentence: I bought a baker's dozen of doughnut for my friends.


9. Cock and Bull Story
Meaning: An unbelievable tale.
Sentence: The Story of Loch Ness monster is a cock and bull story. I don't think that there's still a creature like that.


10. Cross Your Fingers
Meaning: To hope that something happens the way you want it to.
Sentence: I hope I pass the interview. Cross fingers.


11. Break A Leg
Meaning: A superstitious way to say 'good luck' without saying 'good luck', but rather the opposite.


12. Don't count your chickens before they hatch
Meaning: Don't rely on it until you're sure of it.


13. Finger lickin' good
Meaning: A very tasty food or meal.
Sentence: The fried chicken in KFC is finger lickin' good.


14. Get Over It
Meaning: To move beyond something that is bothering you.
Sentence:  I need to get over from my past relation because it is bothering me too much.


15. Graveyard Shift
Meaning: Working hours from about 12:00 am to 8:00 am. The time of the day when most other people are sleeping
Sentence: Call center agents usually have a graveyard shift.


16. High Five
Meaning: Slapping palms above each others heads as celebration gesture
Sentence: Wow! You are improving! High five! =)


17. It's A Small World
Meaning: You frequently see the same people in different places
Sentence: Here you are again, it's a small world! 


18. Jaywalk
Meaning: Crossing the street (from the middle) without using the crosswalk.
Sentence: The child was accidentally hit.


19. Lend Me Your Ear
Meaning: To politely ask for someone's full attention.
Sentence: We will start the lesson now, so lend me your ears.


20. New York Minute
Meaning: A minute that seems to go by quickly, especially in a fast paced environment.


21. Over My Dead Body
Meaning: When you absolutely will not allow something to happen.


22. Saved By The Bell
Meaning: Saved at the last possible moment.


23. Start From Scratch
Meaning: To do it all over again from the beginning.


24. To Make A Long Story Short
Meaning: Something someone would say during a long and boring story in order to keep his/her audience from losing attention. Usually the story isn't shortened.


25. You Are What You Eat
Meaning: In order to stay healthy you must eat healthy foods.


26. Bite your tongue
Meaning: to stop yourself before you say something you regret.
Sentence: I wanted to tell my boss she was wrong, but I had to bite my tongue.


27. The early bird gets the worm
Meaning: The person that acts first usually has the best chance for success, thus, "the early bird gets the worm." As in, "Roger always gets the best deals at yard sales. The early bird gets the worm!"
